Perlite is a volcanic glass that when gets heated , expands and pores. When exposed to heat , it can be expanded up to twenty times its original volume . This expansion is a result of heated water within the perlite rock. When the glass  lava rock is heated to a temperature of about nine hundred degrees Celsius , the water molecules trapped inside the stone turn into steam , which will increase the volume of the rock . Usually , before expanding, perlite it is gray , then after it is heated , perlite color typically changes to light gray to white.

Perlite is known in the industry either as crude perlite which is produced through crushing and screening in various sizes and also as expanded perlite which is produced  through heating the perlite ore.
